ConDUCKtors & DUCKs

Our colorful cast of DUCKs and ConDUCKtors are here to make your tour of Boston an extremely memorable and amazing one!

Colonel Thomas Darling

Colonel Thomas Darling

Colonel Thomas Darling is a blast from the past…literally.  Knocked out by a rebel cannonball in 1776, he awoke in a pine box to watch the British Fleet disappearing over the Boston Harbor horizon, and he’s been stuck here ever since.

While he petitions Britain for back pay, he shows our guests around Back Bay!

Kat Burglar

Kat Burglar

Kat Burglar comes from the greatest family of criminals you’ve never heard of…but you know their work:  The Brinks Job, the Gardner Heist…they even lifted the “R” out of the Boston accent!

Her family thinks she’s here to look at schools, but she’s really just casing the joint to pull off the biggest theft our city has ever seen!

Ray by Play

Ray by Play

Ray by Play always loves sports–ALL sports.

Trouble is, he loves them all so much that he jumbled up his announcer phrases more than a starting pitcher trying to kick a field goal for a hat-trick.

When his broadcasting career became history, he climbed onboard during a Rolling Rally…to broadcast history!

Captain Quincy

Captain Quincy

Captain Quincy planned to follow in his family’s wake of shark hunters, but his hopes ran aground when he found out that he’s allergic to salt water.

Undaunted, he’s determined to troll the Charles for the monster he swears is out there:

The Charles River Wicked White Shark!

Ducks

Catie Copley

Ducks

Catie Copley

Catie is named after Catie Copley, the Fairmont Copley Plaza’s canine ambassador. She was the city’s favorite dog who passed away in 2017 after 15 years of service with the Fairmont. She was considered family not only to the Fairmont but to the folks at BDT and we wanted to commemorate all the joy that she brought to this world by being with us. Her name was also a nod to Copley Square, which the Fairmont overlooks. Located in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston and home to one of the most influential architectural buildings in the United States, the Trinity Church. The square was once home to the Museum of Fine Arts (now the Fairmont Copley Plaza) and is still the site of the Boston Public Library, the first public lending library in the United States.

Bobby Oar

Bobby Oar grew up watching hockey, and so one day he went out to the frozen Charles River to learn to skate just like the pros. When he got stranded on a springtime ice floe, he was rescued by a passing crew team– and found the sport that made him a local hero! So tape up your paddle and enjoy your tour with with your host: Number 4, Bobby Oar

Ducks

Beantown Betty

Ducks

Beantown Betty

Betty was Boston Duck Tours first DUCK, purchased back in 1994. She is named after the phrase Beantown, which is a nickname for Boston. This term was first used when sailors were coming back to port in the colonial era. The familiar smell of cooked baked beans, a Boston staple, surely meant that the crew was close to home. Ever since that era, the name “Beantown” has had a special place in all Bostonians hearts.

Ducks

Beacon Hilda

Ducks

Beacon Hilda

Hilda is named for Beacon Hill, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Boston. Beacon Hill’s homes are primarily federal-style row houses. The neighborhood is lit with beautiful gas streetlights. It is home to the Massachusetts State House. Beacon Hill was originally much taller, but it was cut down between 1807 and 1824; the soil was used to helped fill in the North Cove which was between Beacon Hill and the North End.

ConDucktors

Captain Cabbie

ConDucktors

Captain Cabbie

Captain Cabbie hails from a long line of Taxi drivers, but when it came to handling his own hack, Cabbie didn’t fare so well. Since he’s always been better at talking about sights than driving to them, he is thrilled to join the family at Boston Duck Tours and leave his checkered past.

Ducks

Back Bay Bertha

Ducks

Back Bay Bertha

Bertha is named after Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. The Back Bay got its name from the fact that it was once a bay in the Charles River. A dam was built with a toll road on top of it to connect Boston to Watertown. This left the city with more than 430 acres of marshland. In 1857, the work began to fill in the marshy bay area with over 330 million cubic feet of landfill. It was not completed until 1900. Some of Boston’s most famous buildings are located in the Back Bay including the John Hancock Tower, The Prudential Center, Trinity Church, and the Boston Public Library.

Arthur Fiddler

ConDucktors

Arthur Fiddler

Arthur Fiddler is a musician – a WICKED BAD musician. After his recent (unsolicited) audition at Symphony Hall, the conversation crescendoed into a cacophony that resulted in him being thrown out onto his fermata. As he left Symphony Hall, dejected he came upon a sign and one of our duck stops that said “ConDUCKtors Wanted”. Upon seeing the sign he thought “Of course, if you can’t play – conduct!” Arthur has been conducting sightseeing symphonies of beautiful Boston ever since…

Ducks

Arborway Alex

Ducks

Arborway Alex

Alex has been considered the fleets prettiest DUCK. She has large blue morning glories spanning the length if her white body. Her top half is painted green. She was named after the Arborway section of Boston located in Jamaica Plain. The Arborway was a piece of the famous “Emerald Necklace” a 40-mile ring of parks that encircles the city of Boston. This park system was created by the famous landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmstead, who also created Central Park in New York City. Arborway Alex was Boston Duck Tours first bio-diesel DUCK. We thought it would be fitting to give this vehicle a “green” theme given the momentous step the company had taken towards going green. Alex was christened in conjunction with the Emerald Necklace Conservancy in 2008 at the Arnold Arboretum.

The year was 1942, America was getting into WWII. There was a huge need for woman to join the work force. Women were needed to build the military vehicles and weapons for the war.

When the war was over Robin liked working on the DUKWs so much she decided to stick around, and give tours around Boston.

She can often be seen cruising the streets of Boston chanting “We Can Do It.”

Tub of the Hub

Ducks

Tub of the Hub

Tub was named in a “Name the Duck” contest won by a local school child. This bright red beauty’s name stems from another Boston nickname, The Hub. Today, Bostonians like to say the city is “The Hub of the Universe”.

Ducks

South End Sara

Ducks

South End Sara

Sara is named for Boston’s South End Neighborhood, which was another of Boston’s many landfill projects. The South End was built before technology allowed builders to construct concrete and steel pilings. Because of this, engineers drove wooden pilings into the dirt to a level just below the water table. This created a solid base on which to build. Once bordered by the famous Boston & Providence Railroad, most of the streets in the South End are named for towns that were serviced by those railroad lines. Sara was christened by Mayor Menino during Boston’s 2006 Pridelights ceremony.

This flag was created by Captain Driver’s mother to fly from his ship and measured 10 feet by 17 feet. After moving to Nashville, Tennessee, Captain Driver’s flag became famous as the symbol of victory after the Union soldiers retook control of Nashville during the Civil War.

Ducks

Molly Molasses

Ducks

Molly Molasses

Molly is named for the Great Molasses Flood that occurred in the North End on January 15, 1919. A large iron tank held nearly 2.5 million gallons of molasses. That day, the tank burst open. The molasses flowed down the streets of the North End at about 35 miles per hour. Twenty-one people were killed in the flood and over 150 were injured. You may be asking yourself “who needs that much molasses?” Well, molasses was the main ingredient in distilling alcohol back in 1919 and the ironic thing about the date on which the flood took place was that it was the day before the 18th amendment was ratified, starting prohibition. Molly was named by Boston Duck Tours History Officer, James Healy and christened in 1999 at our Prudential Center Duck Stop.

In 1927, it was renamed for Longfellow who had written about the original bridge in a poem entitled “The Bridge”. The Longfellow Bridge is also known as the ‘Salt and Pepper Bridge’ because of the shape of its central towers. During the summer months the Charles River Clean up Boat passes under the Longfellow Bridge every day. It’s clean up efforts have helped make the Charles a cleaner and more beautiful river. The clean up boat is one of the recipients of our “Quack, Quack, Give Back” Program.

Ducks

Liberty Teresa

Ducks

Liberty Teresa

Teresa is named after the Liberty Tree, which was the famous elm tree that stood near the Boston Common. The Liberty Tree was one of the places the “Sons of Liberty”, would gather to protest British rule. On Occasion they would hang lanterns on its branches to symbolize unity. The Liberty Tree was so despised by the British loyalists that they cut it down in 1775. That only enraged the colonists even more. To show their support for the revolution, people started hanging flags with a picture of the tree.

When the gates were opened, water shot out of the fountain 40 feet into the air to the cheers of thousands of onlookers. Ducks

Commonwealth Curley

Ducks

Commonwealth Curley

Both parts of Curley’s name have some meaning. Curley comes from the famous Boston mayor, James Michael Curley, one of the most influential politicians to every serve the city. Massachusetts is a Commonwealth. This is because in 1780, when John Adams wrote the second draft of the state’s Constitution, he changed the name of the state from “The State of Massachusetts-Bay” to “ The Commonwealth of Massachusetts” so there would be no confusion that this was the second draft of the document. Massachusetts thus became the only state in the country to ever change its name.

Ducks

Charlie River

Ducks

Charlie River

Charlie is named for the Charles River, which separates Boston from Cambridge to the north. Due to massive pollution caused by sewage overflow, mills and factories built along it’s banks in the 19th century the Charles River became a toxic mess. It wasn’t until 1965 with the creation of the Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) that an effort was made to clean up the river. Since 1995, the river‘s water quality has gone from a D to a B+ today and is now considered swimmable. This is due to the efforts of the CRWA (a recipient of our “Quack, Quack, Give Back Program”) and slew of other public and private initiatives. It’s named after King Charles I of England. Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood is all landfill, built on what once was the Back Bay of the Charles River’s south side. If you find yourself on Charles Street during your trip to the city, you will be on what once was the shoreline of the Charles River. Boston Common is original land, the Public Garden and everything west to Kenmore Square is landfill.

When I got older I wanted the job to turn the gas lamps of Beacon Hill on, but to my dismay I couldn’t get that job. Automation, electrification, and the fact we don’t turn those lamps off meant my job prospects had dimmed over time. Thankfully Boston Duck Tours has allowed me to still illuminate the city for people; really ignite a passion in them for Boston. Let me make Boston shine for you*
