Bertha is named after Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. The Back Bay got its name from the fact that it was once a bay in the Charles River. A dam was built with a toll road on top of it to connect Boston to Watertown. This left the city with more than 430 acres of marshland. In 1857, the work began to fill in the marshy bay area with over 330 million cubic feet of landfill. It was not completed until 1900. Some of Boston’s most famous buildings are located in the Back Bay including the John Hancock Tower, The Prudential Center, Trinity Church, and the Boston Public Library.
